ImagineLaw returns to La Union for MPOWER and Tobacco Control Enforcement Training

Representatives from local government units (LGUs) across La Union gathered for the MPOWER and Tobacco Control Enforcement Training from May 5 to 7 to strengthen local efforts in creating smoke-free and vape-free environments in the province. The training was also  a venue for LGUs to share their experiences in tobacco control implementation, and learn from successful enforcement practices in other parts of the Philippines. 

Participants acknowledged that smoking and vaping remain prevalent in La Union, particularly in tourist destinations such as Urbiztondo, despite continued tobacco control efforts. Many LGUs also recognized the increasing popularity of vape products among young people, highlighting the need for stronger policies and more effective enforcement measures.

The training provided participants with a comprehensive overview of the MPOWER framework and key provisions of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Resource speakers also presented evidence on the health impacts of tobacco and nicotine use, such as the health risks associated with vaping. 

During the workshop, participants shared current initiatives being implemented in their respective localities to promote smoke-free and vape-free communities. They also highlighted common implementation challenges including limited resources for monitoring and enforcement.
